With gas at $4.00 a gallon and my 1997 Dodge Stratus costing me more and more in repairs, I decided it was time to do some research on fuel efficient cars. I don't want to spend a whole lot on a new car (less than $15,000), so fortunately the most fuel efficient cars are also some of the least expensive cars. I excluded hybrids from my research because they're just way too expensive compared to the gas savings.

I'm primarily looking for a four-door sedan or hatchback that averages about 30 mpg (25 city/35 hwy) and has enough trunk space to carry my road bike. I prefer to drive a manual transmission and they typically get better fuel mileage and are cheaper than automatics. Below is a list of the new cars I'm considering and any insights I've gained from research and test drives. Click on the photo or details to read my review.
